SHORT BIO

Chameleon is a trio born from a 20-year friendship and collaboration between Laura Targett (Australia/UK), Bree Delian (Australia/Spain), and Luis Nicolás Carrete (Spain).  Drawing on the rich Celtic traditions of Ireland, Scotland, Spain and Brittany, Chameleon’s love of Spanish melodies and Eastern European rhythms breathes new life into traditional forms, taking unexpected turns to create an experience that is both vibrant and reflective.

With Laura’s vibrant fiddling, Bree’s soulful accordion, and Luis’s driving guitar and bass lines they celebrate the spontaneity, intimacy, and pure joy of live music. Audiences are invited to share in this dialogue—a conversation between friends and traditions, between past and present, between the musicians and the moment.

Thaney / Tropnalo Oro

Laura learned Thaney from the Scottish band Malinky and loved their use of a 7/8 rhythm, which gave Luis the perfect foundation to add his rhythmic backbone. To make it our own, we decided to sing in unison, a choice that brings a chant-like quality to the song, creating a fresh and unexpected dynamic. Laura taught Bree Tropnalo Oro, an amazing 7/8 tune that she learnt from Linsey Pollacks collection of Macedonian tunes, in the early 2000s when they were touring with a Celtic dance show across Australia and New Zealand. It was one of their favourite pieces from that time, and adding this tune to the parts of chorus and finale were a lot of fun. Laura’s fiddle harmonies bring a rich, expressive energy to this set.

Muñeira de Soto d’Ayer / Star of Munster Jig / French Canadian / McArthurRd

This set combines old classics with new tunes to show the diversity of Chameleon’s repertoire. We begin with Muñeira de Soto d’Ayer, a tune by Lisardo Prieto (Felpeyu), one of Asturias’s finest composers of traditional music. Then comes Star of Munster, which we transformed from a classic Irish reel into a jig—a playful experiment sparked during a 2002 campfire session with Bree, Lisardo Prieto and Igor Medio when Felpeyu were touring Australia. We love how rhythmic changes can breathe new life into a tune. The French Canadian reel adds a melodic shift, offering Laura the chance to shine with her lively interpretation.  Finally, we wrap up with McArthur Rd, a Shetland Island reel that Laura and Bree played together two decades ago when it was relatively new to the session scene. Now a classic, it closes this set with energy and nostalgia.

Roast Beef (AKA Rosbif)

We always thought this tune was called Roast Beef and that it came from a French composer who used the nickname for the English (known for their love of roast beef—just like Australians say "POME"). But after a deeper dive, we discovered its real name is Rosbif, collected by French musician Philippe Krumm and popularised by the English band Rosbif in the 1980s. Bree’s version comes from the legendary Australian button accordion player Jacko Kevins. Since Bree plays by ear, her interpretation of this tune—passed all the way to Australia—adds another layer to its long journey. Over time and across continents,  evolving into a unique take on the original.
